Heat pump hot water rebate in VIC, explained straight

Two schemes combine in Victoria: VEU (Victorian Energy Upgrades) discounts applied by accredited providers, and the Solar Victoria hot water rebate of up to $1,000. Together they commonly remove roughly $1,500 or more from a heat pump hot water system — before federal STCs are applied on top.

How the VIC stack works

  • VEU: accredited providers apply a discount directly to your quote, based on energy-efficiency certificates your upgrade generates. You never handle the money.
  • Solar Victoria hot water rebate: up to $1,000 (50% of the system cost) for eligible households replacing an old electric or gas system. Eligibility includes income and property-value caps, and you generally can't hold certain other Solar Homes rebates at the same time.
  • Federal STCs: applied at point of sale everywhere in Australia — commonly worth several hundred to over a thousand dollars depending on the system.

What Melbourne households actually pay

  • Typical systems run $3,000–$6,500 supplied and installed before incentives. After the full VIC stack, well-priced systems commonly land near or under $1,000 — heavily discounted packages are widely advertised.
  • Quotes vary a lot for identical units, so compare at least three accredited providers and ask each to itemise every discount on the quote.

Quick answers

Can I combine the VEU discount and the Solar Victoria rebate?

Commonly yes — that's what makes Victoria's stack the strongest in the country, at roughly $1,500 or more combined before STCs. Each scheme has its own eligibility rules (income caps, property value, existing system), so confirm your exact combination with a VEU-accredited installer.

Who applies for the Victorian rebates?

The accredited provider handles VEU, and they'll usually guide the Solar Victoria application too. Incentives are applied as discounts to your quote rather than paid to you afterwards.

What if I'm replacing a gas hot water system?

Gas-to-heat-pump replacements are eligible under the Victorian schemes, and they also remove your hot water from daily gas usage — worth factoring in if you're considering going all-electric.
